Dynaflex was thin and cheap feeling, but it was clean vinyl. Nevertheless, in my experience Dynaflex usually WAS an improvement in sound, but ONLY compared to the noisy recycled vinyl used by other labels at the time, and only with all other things being equal. I recall RCA at the time touting Dynaflex as an improvement in the sound, but it was strictly about the money. RCA simply went a different cost cutting route with Dynaflex in the early 1970s. That is one of the reasons why Capitol pressings from the late 1970s onward are highly sought after, frequently superior to early-mid 1970s original pressings, although I think that their mastering philosophy and practices also improved (hello, Wally!). MCA was perhaps worst of all, and Capitol, at least until about 1976 when they "saw the light", midway through their solid reddish-orange label years. Most labels went with noisy recycled vinyl. Columbia House was always more dignified with their simple 'CRC' or natural looking text 'Manufactured by Columbia House Under License"ĭynaflex vinyl was used for RCA label product during an era of massive cost cutting by the major labels. I HATE the ugly way BMG removes the UPC on CDs and adds their own ugly text. I try to avoid these when buying used discs but often sellers won't indicate club versions. And a CH Elton John "Too Low For Zero" vinyl which has silence inserted between tracks where it shouldn't be, for example the crossfade of Crystal/Kiss The Bride is interrupted. I have a Queen "Greatest Hits" 1981 vinyl from CH which has the album version of 'Keep Yourself Alive' in place of the single fadeout version it's supposed to have. Tina Turner's "Simply The Best" CD was missing 'River Deep - Mountain High' on the Columbia House version for example. I do know that club versions can be different in ways other than quality. In your experience, is the quality the same as their original counterparts? Glancing through our host's discography, it seems the only CD I own of his mastering is The Mamas & The Papas - 16 Of Their Greatest Hits, but it's a Columbia House version (marked 'CRC') so is it inferior? Wondering if anyone has any (more) thoughts about these.
